A safer bet? A conservative approach to gambling regulation

As government considers the results of the Gambling Act review and draws up plans for a white paper in the coming months, what should future gambling regulation look like? This panel considers the recent IEA paper ‘A safer bet?’ which examines some proposed changes to UK gambling laws and the potential unintended consequences, as well as asking what changes the government could make to protect gamblers from undue harm while not infringing on the rights of those who wish to gamble safely.

Annabel Denham (Chair) | is the Director of Communications at the IEA. Previously a journalist at City A.M. and Editor at The Entrepreneur’s Network, Annabel oversees the IEA’s media, digital, and public affairs strategy.

Scott Benton MP | is the Conservative MP for Blackpool South and has been an MP since 12 December 2019. Scott is a vice chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Betting and Gaming which advises Parliament and the government on gambling-related issues and supports communication and cooperation between the gambling industry and policy actors.

Dia Chakravarty | is the Brexit Editor for The Telegraph newspaper. A passionate advocate for freedom, Dia is the former political director of ThinkTent co-hosts The Taxpayers’ Alliance.

Brigid Simmonds | has been the Chair of the Betting and Gaming Council since it was established in 2019. The BGC champions the betting and gaming industry and sets world class standards to ensure an enjoyable, fair and safe betting and gaming experience.

Brigid was previously Chief Executive of the British Beer & Pub Association for ten years and before that Chief Executive of the umbrella organisation Business in Sport and Leisure (BISL). She is a Vice-President of the Sport and Recreation Alliance and is also a board member of the Tourism Alliance. In June 2006 she was awarded an OBE for Services to Sport.

Christopher Snowdon | is the Head of Lifestyle Economics at the IEA and as he likes to put it, his work focuses on pleasure, prohibition and dodgy statistics. He is the author of numerous books including The Art of Suppression, The Spirit Level Delusion and Velvet Glove; Iron Fist. For the IEA, he has authored a number of publications including Sock Puppets, The Crack Cocaine of Gambling, Free Market Solutions in Health, and the focus of today’s panel “A safer bet? Gambling and the risks of over-regulation”.
